Canvey Lake – An Independent Mess

As you may already be aware, Canvey Lake had to have a fishing ban imposed due to the water becoming toxic to fish and other wildlife. We have been saddened by the pictures on social media of fish, ducks and even swans that have been poisoned and subsequently died. It is disgusting that the lake has been allowed to fester and become contaminated when those in charge were well aware of its issues and have simply failed to take action.

The water in the lake is now so contaminated that the water now poses a health hazard and clean-up must now be left to professionals.

Dave Blackwell and the Canvey Independents try to talk a good game about protecting our environment but due to their inaction they’ve fallen far short. Dave Blackwell is on the Town Council, Borough Council and County Council but has failed to do anything at any level. A statement released by Canvey Town Council admitted they have been well aware of issues for over a decade, but they have allowed the situation to further deteriorate. It’s a shocking failure for the people of Canvey.

This inaction seems point to a worrying trend of the CIIP led administration which has made a habit of cancelling council meetings.

We, as your Castle Point Labour Party, believe that Canvey Town Council has failed in its duty to protect and preserve Canvey Lake. We are calling for the Town Council to take FULL responsibility for Canvey Lake and, if they fail at this, they should resign to make way for those who can.

Our Virtual Leaflet on Canvey Lake

Our leaflet, below, answers many of the questions we’ve heard about Canvey Lake and challenges some of the Independents’ more questionable assertions including ‘Canvey Lake is not a Lake’ and ‘The Town Council is not responsible for the water in the lake’.
