Tom Harrison: Candidate for Victoria Ward

I am married with three grown up sons and two grandsons. Following a long working career, I retired from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office as a Shift Commander. During my working career I obtained extensive knowledge of management and developed strong organisational skills. During my career, I obtained many professional qualifications. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport.

Since my retirement, I have become a volunteer working in the local community. This gives me the opportunity to use my expertise to help my fellow citizens. Some examples are set out below.

* Trustee of Citizens Advice South Essex.
* A School Governor.
* Vice-Chair of our Patients Participation Group.
* Member of Keep Our NHS Public.
* Save Our Libraries Essex. Our Castle Point campaign was successful in reversing the County Council plans to close or reduce library services.
* Campaigned to save the downgrading of Southend Hospital’s A&E.
* Attended many public consultations relating to the STP, also the Transport Working Group.
* Mid and South East Essex NHS Foundation Trust – Public Governor for Castle Point.

In terms of sport, I am a former BJC Middleweight Champion in Judo. I gained my Black Belt, whilst I was still a teenager. I am a member of our local Gym. Since the start of the pandemic, I now have a regular daily walking routine. My wife and I were involved in many activities with our family and friends prior to Covid-19. We look forward to being able to return to a normal life, soon.

My interest in politics stems from when we lived in Staffordshire. Whilst living in the area, I was elected to serve on Staffordshire County Council. I currently hold the following political positions.

* Vice Chair of Castle Point Constituency Labour Party.
* Chair of the South Essex Branch of the Co-op Party.

I am proud to be selected to stand for election as your Labour Party candidate for Victoria Ward on the Borough Council. I am aware of problems being experienced by our local community. As always, under the Tory administration, the less able are suffering the most. The Conservatives have been in charge of central government for over eleven years, also control both County and our Borough Councils. Their ineptitude is self-evident, wherever you may look. Funding has been reduced in all core services, in real terms. Council tax is being increased whilst services are under greater pressure to deliver to the community. In other words, we are all asked to pay more for less. I am calling for a more pragmatic approach which includes adopting a social conscience for our local community. The electorate should now hold the Conservative administration accountable for their past poor performance.
